Rhinitis is one of the most common conditions of the upper airways, affecting children and adults alike.
Although it may seem harmless, rhinitis can have a significant impact on quality of life: on sleep, concentration, breathing and even on hearing and the sinuses.
At RINO Clinic – Ferizaj, we offer advanced diagnostics and up-to-date treatment for every form of rhinitis, combining clinical experience with modern ENT technology.
🩺 What is rhinitis?
Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa – the lining of the nasal passages that helps to filter, warm and humidify the air we breathe.
When this lining becomes irritated or inflamed, symptoms such as a runny or blocked nose, sneezing and itching appear.
The inflammation may be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic), depending on the cause and how long it lasts.
🔹 The main types of rhinitis
1. Allergic rhinitis
This is the most common form, particularly during the pollen season or in people who are sensitive to house dust or animal dander.
It is caused by the immune system reacting to allergens present in the air.
Main symptoms:
- Frequent sneezing,
- Watery discharge from the nose,
- Itching in the nose and eyes,
- Nasal blockage,
- Sometimes a reduced sense of smell.
2. Non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis
This form is not related to allergy, but to irritants in the environment or disturbances of the blood vessels in the nasal lining.
The most common causes:
- Changes in temperature and humidity,
- Air pollution and cigarette smoke,
- Strong odours, perfumes or chemical sprays,
- Prolonged use of decongestant sprays,
- Hormonal changes or stress.
This form is common in our climate and often presents with nasal blockage that alternates from side to side (sometimes one nostril, sometimes the other).
3. Chronic rhinitis
When symptoms last longer than 12 weeks, we speak of chronic rhinitis.
This condition is often associated with:
- Chronic sinusitis,
- A deviated nasal septum,
- Nasal polyps or anatomical factors that obstruct breathing.
Symptoms include:
- Persistent nasal blockage,
- Thick nasal discharge,
- Loss of the sense of smell,
- Pressure or pain in the face,
- Difficulty sleeping and constant fatigue.
🔍 How is rhinitis diagnosed at RINO Clinic?
At RINO Clinic, the diagnosis is made through a complete ENT assessment using modern, pain-free methods.
We use advanced equipment to examine the nasal lining and the condition of the airways.
Our diagnostic methods include:
- High-resolution nasal endoscopy – allowing a detailed view of the mucosa, the septum and the sinus openings,
- Otoscopy and otomicroscopy, when rhinitis is accompanied by ear problems (for example a feeling of pressure or hearing loss),
- Tympanometry – to check how nasal blockage affects ventilation of the middle ear,
- Clinical assessment of nasal breathing and of the structure of the nose.
These examinations help to determine whether the rhinitis is temporary, chronic, allergic or anatomical in origin.
💊 Treatment of rhinitis
Treatment is tailored to the cause and the severity of the symptoms.
The aim is to reduce inflammation, improve breathing and prevent complications such as sinusitis or chronic infections.
The most frequently used options include:
- Topical corticosteroid nasal sprays (under medical supervision),
- Oral or topical antihistamines for allergic forms,
- Nasal rinsing with saline solution to cleanse the mucosa,
- Treatment addressing the anatomy (for example a deviated septum or polyps) through minimally invasive procedures, when necessary.
In many cases, combining treatment with home care and follow-up by an ENT specialist gives lasting results and noticeably improves quality of life.
🌿 Practical advice for patients
- Keep your rooms clean and well ventilated.
- Avoid exposure to dust, mould and cigarette smoke.
- Rinse the nose daily with saline solution.
- Do not overuse decongestant sprays – using them for more than 5–7 days can lead to nasal dependence.
- Drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated.
- Consult your ENT doctor if symptoms last longer than 7–10 days.
