What is chronic tonsillitis?
Chronic tonsillitis is a recurrent or persistent inflammation of the tonsils that lasts longer than 3 months or returns very frequently during the year. It is usually the result of infections that were not treated properly, although other causes are possible as well.
Why does chronic tonsillitis occur?
- Repeated bacterial or viral infections
- The deep, crevassed structure of the tonsils (tonsillar crypts), which traps bacteria and dead cells
- A weakened immune system or genetic factors
- Acid reflux from the stomach
- Polluted environments or exposure to tobacco smoke
Main symptoms
- A sore throat that keeps coming back or is constantly present
- Bad breath (halitosis), particularly in the morning
- Tonsils covered with white spots (detritus) or tonsil stones
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck that do not subside
- A slightly raised temperature and chronic fatigue
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- A changed voice or the sensation of a foreign body in the throat
How is it diagnosed?
- A history of recurrent infections (more than 5–7 infections per year)
- A detailed examination by an ENT specialist
- Laboratory tests (in some cases: ASO test, CRP, etc.)
- Fibre-optic endoscopy if deeper problems are suspected
Treatment of chronic tonsillitis
- Conservative treatment: local antiseptics, throat rinses, improved oral hygiene and strengthening of the immune system
- Antibiotics: only during acute episodes or as short courses in selected cases
- Tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils): recommended when infections are frequent and severe and affect quality of life
Who benefits from a tonsillectomy?
- Children or adults with more than 5–6 confirmed infections per year
- Cases with complications such as peritonsillar abscess, recurrent tonsil stones or breathing problems during sleep (apnoea)
- When the tonsils are enlarged and obstruct breathing or speech
👉 Please note: Although it is a relatively straightforward procedure, a tonsillectomy requires post-operative care and 7–10 days of rest. Most patients experience a clear improvement in their quality of life.
💡 Conclusion: If you or your child are dealing with repeated tonsil infections, do not ignore them. Chronic tonsillitis can affect everyday life and lead to unnecessary complications. A consultation with an ENT specialist is the first step towards a long-term solution.
